We’ve been asked many times why we use big baits for our Crappie fishing, so let me explain why it works for us. There are lots of reasons , one it saves us lots of time when trying to locate deep fish a 1/4 oz. falls and covers deep stuff and keeps you in contact with the bottom and the bait better then lighter jigs. You can use a heavier line which helps you be able to see the line much better and that’s very important to tell you when your bait is on the bottom, and shows you when you’re in the brush and you’ll always see the bite even if you can’t feel it. When I first started fishing jigs for Crappie 35 years ago I was fishing the light stuff on light line and it worked , but as the years went by and I started guiding and teaching others how to fish jigs I found it was much easier for them to fish heavy stuff then light. We even fish 1/4 oz with a bobber and through the ice. We like using the super tubes and 3 in. twisters and shad bodies on the 1/4 oz lead heads, because they catch lots of different kinds of fish, and bigger fish as a rule. Not that smaller jigs won’t catch big fish too, you have a better chance of landing those bigger ones with the bigger hooks and heavier line.
